Bank History

As one of New Jersey's largest and strongest independent banks, Columbia Bank today provides financial services to over 100,000 households and businesses.

Founded in 1927, by some of Fair Lawn's most prominent citizens, the Fair Lawn Building and Loan Association actually started inside a one-room schoolhouse. As assets approached $100,000, the Association relocated in 1931 to inside the Kuiken Brothers Lumber Company and later moved into even larger quarters, this time inside the Fair Lawn Town Hall.

In 1937, the Association received approval from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) to feature federally-insured savings accounts. A few years later, their name was changed to The First Savings and Loan Association of Fair Lawn. Ceremonies were held in 1941 to commemorate the opening of a new bank building at the corner of River Road and Fair Lawn Avenue.

Over the next two and half decades, the bank continued to expand, both opening new branches and acquiring banks in established New Jersey markets. Their new administrative headquarters at the intersection of Broadway and Plaza Road opened in 1967.

In 1970, the bank became known as Columbia Savings and Loan Association. The bank's name was again changed to Columbia Savings Bank, S. L. A. in 1989. Six years later, the name was shortened to Columbia Savings Bank and, in 2002, the name was further shortened to Columbia Bank to reflect the bank's commercial banking expertise.

Today, Fair Lawn still remains the hometown of the bank's corporate headquarters, which is located on Route 208 North. With 44 branches, across ten New Jersey Counties, Columbia remains steadfastly committed to home ownership and community and business prosperity.
